EDIT: Yes, guys, it's FINE if it doesn't have a fancy background or it's fully shaded on white paper. What we DONT want is simple lineart or uncolored sketches. For example:
THIS is fine: rejectall-american.deviantart.…
These are NOT: rejectall-american.deviantart.… ; rejectall-american.deviantart.…
Hope this helps clear things.

Hello Everyone!

Some of the Admins and I were talking and we have decided that it would be beneficial for the group if we imposed a slightly stricter quality limit on the submissions. This does not mean that we are going to toss out all the beginner level submissions automatically, but this does mean that if you are a beginner your best bet is to put your absolute best work forward. A trend we have noticed with beginner art is that a lot of times it is just a sketch on a blank piece of paper. No background, no anything. We already don't accept WIPs and unfinished pieces, but a lot of times we get submissions that are labeled as finished when it is just a doodle or sketch on a blank piece of paper, and we will no longer be accepting these. If your finished piece is a character sheet or something that would not require a background, then it needs to have some polishing done to it. There is a difference between these two works:

th00.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/i…

These are obviously extremes on both ends of the spectrum, but you get the idea.

TL;DR Put forward your best effort even if you are a beginner because we will no longer accept works that look like WIPs.

That is all, thank you! :)

Can you please give more guidelines regarding sketches? Personally, I prefer making detailed sketches without cleaning them up too much. Thanks in advance.

Not sure how to be any more clear than that. We're requiring works to be cleaned up and polished if we are going to overlook a lack of background.

That sounds ok, but I have another point to criticize:
That only one deviation is allowed to contribute in one month (!!!) is really creepy, that doesnt make much fun because everytime I try to submit a new picture Im proud of and want to share to get comments on it, Im stopped by this bad limit.
1 per day or even week would be great and acceptable, but one month is way too long.

Then don't submit until the last day of each month, that way you can decide which one you want to submit.

We've been over this several times before. This rule is not changing.

They put that rule in place because the last Self-Taught Artist group was overwhelmed and eventually closed because of all the submissions to the wrong folder. It's more of a "Think twice before you submit" precaution.

Sounds really great!
It's such a pity that art which has been made with effort drown in sketch dumps with blank bg and a scribble.

This is what we're trying to avoid, a lot of times nothing gets seen because no one wants to sift through piles of doodles and sketches to get to something worthwhile.

That would be an advantage to all the members - let's be honest, a lot of times I chuck an entire pile of deviations just because the thumbnail showing is a doodle on grid paper or a crude pencil drawing. Or a Standard Cat Portrait. Or a badly coloured pony.

What if there's no background, but the character is detailed, inked, and fully colored?

As long as it looks polished and finished, you'll be fine.

Good call, groups should be for art you're proud of or want critiques on, not just every doodle you do.

Ah, I see what you mean. You mean to say that the group isn't a dumping palace for every piece of work somebody has in their whole gallery, its a place to out works that we are either proud of or want critique to improve on.

However, if the drawing quality is really good, but there is no background, does it matter? I struggle with backgrounds and often leave my things blank, but I put much more effort into the drawing, digitally and traditionally.

would something like that he accepted?

I'm sure it would as I'm the exact same way! I think in reality what we DON'T want are "sketch dump #3 million" and "scribbly lineart that was done in 5 minutes on muro"
:)

Pretty much, we're trying to keep the balance and remain an open accepting group without tipping into art dump territory. Something like that would be accepted if it was presented. Maybe put a texture or a border. Even a plain color or transparency would be better than a stark white rectangle. I am the same way, so when I have a piece that doesn't have a background I just make it a color and add a texture. It's all about presentation :)

It doesn't matter what you put as long as it meets the new standard, try out what you need to
